Abstract | In the first part of this presentation, a critique is made of teacher education in general, pointing out the fact that schools of education are resigned to accepting academically weak students and have a limited definition of good teaching. A narrow view of the teacher's role is also cited, as well as teacher educators' resistance to change. The second part describes the restructuring of teacher education at the University of New Hampshire at Durham. In the third part, a discussion of the structure of the five-year program includes a description of the required internship, graduate studies, and admission and academic standards for students. The fourth part presents a description of academic and nonacademic characteristics of the students in the program, as well as recruitment methods and enrollment status and projections. A national plan for restructuring teacher education is presented in the final part. (JD) |
